The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi South in the Ahafo Region, Benjamin Assabil Donkor, has made a strong appeal for the creation of an independent police command for the district, arguing that the move is urgently needed to strengthen security and combat growing criminal activities in the area.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Donkor expressed concern over what he described as an increasing wave of armed robbery, drug trafficking and substance abuse within the district.
He attributed part of the challenge to the fact that Asutifi South is still administered under the Asutifi North District Police Command, despite its expanding population and security demands.
According to him, Asutifi South has met the necessary requirements to operate as a standalone district police command. He revealed that the Assembly has already provided a fully furnished standard office complex, as well as a residential bungalow to accommodate a district police commander once the request is approved.
Mr. Donkor therefore appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to expedite action in detaching Asutifi South from the Asutifi North command structure, saying the district needs adequate police personnel and authority to respond swiftly and effectively to crime trends.
Beyond security concerns, the DCE also called on the Chief Justice to post a permanent judge to the Hwidiem Circuit Court to enhance justice delivery in the area. He noted that the Assembly has constructed a secure and well-equipped bungalow for a resident judge, insisting that the continued absence of one is unjustified.
He explained that the current presiding judge is stationed in Tepa in the Ashanti Region and travels daily to Hwidiem for court sittings — a situation he described as inconvenient, inefficient and unsustainable for both judicial administration and litigants.
Mr. Donkor emphasized that granting Asutifi South an autonomous police command and a permanent judge would significantly improve law enforcement, justice delivery and public safety in the district.
