A 27-year-old driver’s mate, Edem Avenyo, has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment after he was found guilty of stealing a mobile phone and cash belonging to a driver at the Tema Station.

Details presented in court indicated that Avenyo stole the phone and later took a photograph of himself with the device. The image was automatically uploaded onto the victim’s WhatsApp status, alerting the owner and helping to trace the suspect.

Further investigations revealed that the convict had also stolen an amount of GH¢7,000 during the incident.

Acting on intelligence from the WhatsApp post, police tracked Avenyo to his hideout, where he was arrested and subsequently arraigned before the Gbese District Court.

He pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and was convicted on his own plea.

During sentencing, Avenyo pleaded for leniency and promised to refund the stolen money and replace the mobile phone. The court, however, imposed a custodial sentence of three months in prison.
