A dramatic intelligence-led police operation has disrupted a planned armed robbery in Afienya-Mataheko, ending in a deadly shoot-out that left four suspected robbers dead, the Tema Regional Police Command has announced.

In a statement issued by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Command, the incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday, December 29, 2025, after police acted on credible intelligence pointing to an imminent robbery attack within the Tema Metropolis and surrounding communities.

According to the release, the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) received advance information on Friday, December 27, 2025, that a network of suspects was preparing coordinated operations in targeted areas. Officers were immediately deployed to key locations, where they maintained discreet surveillance while monitoring the suspects’ movements.

At about 1:00 a.m. on December 29, police patrol officers reportedly encountered four men attempting to force entry into a residential property at Afienya-Mataheko. When officers moved in to apprehend them, the suspects allegedly opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange of gunshots in which all four men sustained critical injuries.

Three of the suspects — identified as Kwabena Azuwebi (alias “Lastman”), Yaro Bawku, and Faisal — were rushed to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival. The fourth suspect, Kassim Hussein, who was initially recaptured and transported under guard for treatment, later died while receiving medical care.

Police say a cache of weapons and offensive implements was retrieved from the scene, including an AK-47 rifle, a Taurus pistol loaded with six rounds of ammunition, two cutlasses, and two motorbikes — one unregistered and the other bearing registration number M-25-GT-4243. The exhibits have been retained to aid continuing investigations.

The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for autopsy, while efforts are underway to trace and arrest any accomplices believed to be connected to the foiled robbery scheme.

The Tema Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and has appealed to residents to continue volunteering credible intelligence to support the ongoing fight against violent crime in the region.
