Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced that the Weija Water Treatment Plant will be taken offline on Friday, December 19, 2025, to allow for essential maintenance work aimed at enhancing the reliability and quality of water service delivery.
In a statement from its Communications Department, the company explained that the plant will be out of operation from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as technical teams carry out critical repairs and upkeep. The exercise forms part of GWL’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the integrity of its water infrastructure and ensure consistent service for customers across the Greater Accra Region.
The temporary shutdown is expected to affect water supply to several areas, including Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Weija, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka La Paz, Tesano, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, and neighboring communities.
GWL management has assured the public that adequate resources and logistics have been deployed to ensure the maintenance works are completed within the scheduled timeframe. Technical crews will work diligently to restore operations promptly once the exercise concludes.
The company has urged residents, businesses, and institutions in affected areas to store sufficient water in advance to minimize disruption during the shutdown.
GWL’s Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu, described the maintenance exercise as a vital step toward sustaining the plant’s operational integrity and improving long-term service delivery.
“We have mobilized all necessary resources and will work assiduously to complete the task on schedule,” he said, emphasizing the importance of the exercise in maintaining a reliable water supply for the capital.
The utility company expressed regret for any inconvenience the temporary disruption may cause and appealed for public cooperation and understanding as it undertakes these critical works to strengthen water infrastructure for the future.
