A Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer has been placed in police custody as investigations intensify into the alleged smuggling of 2,600 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition bound for Paga.
The officer, identified as AICO1 Ahmed Abdul Samad, was formally handed over to the Upper East Regional Police Command to assist with ongoing inquiries. The shocking revelation comes after a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by police on 26 December 2025 at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.
Authorities discovered the large cache of ammunition hidden in a passenger bus traveling to Paga. Alongside the live rounds, officers seized tactical equipment including two bullet-proof plates, a black helmet, and a pair of combat boots.
Subsequent investigations traced the incident to Ahmed Abdul Samad, a native of Nalerigu, who had been stationed at the GIS Paga Sector Command. He was apprehended by the Immigration Service before being officially transferred to police custody on 2 January 2026.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that inquiries are ongoing as they work to uncover the full scope of the operation and identify all individuals involved in the illicit arms movement.
