A task-force from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has launched a major operation targeting illegal mining activities at Hiawa in the Amenfi Central District.
During the raids, authorities dismantled makeshift mining structures and destroyed equipment including water pumps and wooden gold-washing platforms used by illegal operators.
The crackdown is part of NAIMOS’ renewed efforts to address areas that have been reoccupied by illegal miners, whose activities continue to cause significant damage to rivers, forests, and farmlands, in violation of environmental laws.
Officials noted that such operations are crucial not only to preserve Ghana’s natural resources but also to protect communities that rely on these ecosystems for agriculture and clean water. NAIMOS reaffirmed its commitment to sustained enforcement in galamsey-prone areas, warning that repeat offenders will face stricter sanctions under the law.
