The Minority in Parliament has called on Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah to step down or for President John Dramani Mahama to remove him from office, following the withdrawal of a contentious lithium agreement.
The opposition raised concerns that the agreement, as initially presented, contained inaccuracies and was not aligned with Ghana’s national interests. A week after its submission to Parliament, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources withdrew the document, citing the need for broader consultations with industry stakeholders and affected communities.
In a parliamentary statement, the Minority, represented by Old Tafo MP Vincent Assafuah, accused the Minister of lacking proper due diligence in preparing the agreement. He noted that the Minister had initially defended the document before later retracting it, a move that the Minority said undermines his credibility.
The opposition further argued that presenting a flawed agreement to Parliament reflects a disregard for the national interest and labeled the Minister’s actions as misleading to Ghanaians. They concluded that the Minister no longer commands public trust and urged that he be removed from his position to safeguard the management of the country’s natural resources.
