The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel and armoured vehicles to Nalerigu and adjoining communities in the North East Region following the torching of two residential buildings by a group of youths in the regional capital.
The move comes amid rising tension after reports that the group behind the incident has issued threats to set more houses on fire and carry out attacks on residents, heightening fears of further violence in the area.
The reinforcement was announced in a press statement released on December 18, 2025, by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the North East Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Robert Anabiik Anmain, from the Regional Police Headquarters in Nalerigu.
According to the police, the additional deployment is aimed at restoring public order, safeguarding lives and property, enhancing security across affected communities, and ensuring strict enforcement of the curfew imposed on Nalerigu and its surrounding areas.
The reinforcement teams will also support the North East Regional Police Command in stepping up patrols along major highways and key routes to improve security for commuters and residents moving through the region.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior has announced the imposition of a curfew on Nalerigu and nearby communities following advice from the National Security Council. The directive, which takes effect on Thursday, December 18, 2025, was issued through an Executive Instrument.
The curfew will be observed daily from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., as part of measures to contain the situation and prevent further disturbances.
In addition to the curfew, authorities have placed a ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons within the affected areas. The Interior Ministry cautioned that anyone found in violation of the directive will be arrested and prosecuted.
Further restrictions include a prohibition on motorbike movement, the wearing of smocks, the sale of fuel in containers, and all forms of unlawful gatherings.
The police have indicated that investigations into the arson attacks are ongoing and assured the public that all individuals involved in the burning of the houses will be tracked down and brought before the law.
Government has also appealed to traditional leaders, elders, opinion leaders, the youth, and residents of Nalerigu and its environs to remain calm, exercise restraint, and seek peaceful avenues to resolve their grievances in the interest of maintaining peace and stability in the area.
