The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has announced December 13–20, 2025, as National Sanitation Week (Christmas Edition), aimed at improving environmental cleanliness and public health ahead of the festive season.
The Minister explained that the initiative seeks to encourage shared responsibility and active community participation, especially during the Christmas period when travel, social activities, and waste generation rise sharply.
Delivering the announcement, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim called on local authorities, stakeholders, and the general public to work together to maintain clean and orderly communities throughout the season.
In response, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Greater Accra Region have expressed strong commitment to supporting the national sanitation drive. The Dean of the Greater Accra MMDCEs, Hon. Desmond Sowah Laryae, praised the Minister’s direction and reaffirmed the Assemblies’ readiness to intensify sanitation efforts.
He indicated that Assemblies will expand clean-up campaigns, improve monitoring mechanisms, and actively engage residents to achieve noticeable and lasting environmental improvements during the week-long exercise.
Hon. Laryae then further stressed that, sustained collaboration with communities and key stakeholders remains central to achieving long-term sanitation goals across the region.
Meanwhile, the Minister cautioned MMDCEs across the country that failure to meet set sanitation benchmarks would attract sanctions, adding that the President would take decisive action against non-performing Assemblies.
As preparations for National Sanitation Week gather momentum, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim reiterated the importance of effective leadership, rigorous oversight, and broad-based community mobilisation, stressing that proper sanitation is vital to public health, safety, and national progress.
The Ministry has therefore appealed to citizens to take responsibility for their immediate environment and support Assembly-led sanitation programmes to ensure a cleaner Ghana during the Christmas season and beyond.
