A Warrant Officer Class Two of the Ghana Armed Forces has been taken into custody in the Ashanti Region over allegations that he attempted to unlawfully trade military-grade weapons and ammunition to civilians. The arrest followed a covert, intelligence-driven operation carried out by the Ashanti South Police Intelligence Directorate (PID).
The suspect, identified as W.O. II David Kofi Brew, who is attached to the 4th Infantry Battalion in Kumasi, was apprehended on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the Bekwai Shell Service Station.
A situational briefing from the Ashanti South PID revealed that the operation was supervised by the Regional Director, Assistant Superintendent of Police Princeton Peasah Darkwa, and formed part of sustained security efforts to disrupt illegal arms distribution networks operating in Obuasi and nearby communities.
Security intelligence gathered prior to the operation suggested that the officer was actively involved in the clandestine supply of firearms. During the interaction, the suspect allegedly claimed he had access to various categories of weapons, including M16 rifles, G3 rifles, and pistols, and reportedly quoted GH¢80,000 as the price for a single M16 rifle.
On December 16, 2025, the suspect is said to have reached out to the undercover operative to indicate that the firearms were ready for transfer. He was subsequently arrested while attempting to complete the handover.
Weapons and ammunition seized at the scene included a TMM 22 assault rifle loaded with 99 rounds of ammunitionand accompanied by two 12-round magazines, as well as an Ash Taurus GX2 pistol with 100 rounds of ammunitionand three 12-round magazines.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly confessed to having sold weapons to individuals operating within Obuasi and surrounding areas.
He is currently being held in police custody and is cooperating with investigators, while steps are being taken to officially inform the appropriate military authorities of his arrest.
Law enforcement agencies say investigations are continuing, with efforts underway to track down and arrest other individuals believed to be linked to the suspected arms trafficking operation.
