President John Dramani Mahama has called on residents of the Volta Region to actively protect and enhance the area’s long-standing image as Ghana’s environmental “lungs,” stressing that sustainable development must go hand in hand with economic growth.
The President made the appeal at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ho Oxygen City Project, a major urban renewal initiative being implemented through a partnership involving the Ho Municipal Assembly and the Tema Development Corporation (TDC).
In his address, President Mahama underscored the significance of the Volta Region’s rich vegetation and natural ecosystems, describing them as priceless resources that should not be sacrificed in the pursuit of modernization. He explained that the Oxygen City Project has been carefully conceptualized to integrate advanced urban infrastructure with environmentally responsible design, ensuring that development remains in harmony with nature.
He urged traditional rulers, municipal authorities, and community members to collectively commit to preserving green areas, encouraging large-scale tree planting, and adopting sustainable environmental practices that will secure the region’s ecological health for generations to come.
According to the President, the Ho Oxygen City Project sets a fresh standard for city development in Ghana by emphasizing clean air, orderly spatial planning, and enhanced quality of life, while also opening up new economic and employment opportunities, particularly for the youth.
The sod-cutting event attracted a wide cross-section of participants, including chiefs, public officials, and local residents, many of whom voiced confidence that the project would play a transformative role in the development of Ho and further cement the Volta Region’s status as a model of environmental sustainability.
