The Accra High Court has thrown out an application filed by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), widely known as Chairman Wontumi, in which he sought the removal of a freeze placed on a bank account belonging to one of his companies.
The motion challenged a directive issued by the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) that placed restrictions on the bank account of Paradise Insurance. However, the court declined to grant the request, effectively maintaining the freeze. The matter has since been adjourned sine die, with no new date fixed.
- The account restrictions form part of broader investigations initiated in April 2025, when the FIC froze multiple bank accounts associated with Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining. The move was undertaken under Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), which authorises the FIC to block access to accounts suspected to be linked to unlawful financial transactions.
The court action is connected to ongoing criminal cases involving Chairman Wontumi, arising from alleged breaches of Ghana’s mining regulations. Investigations into the suspected financial and regulatory violations remain active, with the account freeze continuing as part of enforcement and oversight measures.
