Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has directed the immediate initiation of investigations into the reported death of a Ghanaian student in Latvia, following growing concerns from the victim’s family over suspected foul play.

The Minister made this known in a public statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), where he described the incident as deeply distressing and assured Ghanaians that the government is actively pursuing the matter through appropriate diplomatic channels.

He disclosed that his attention had been drawn to a troubling video circulating online that alleges the killing of a Ghanaian student identified as Nana Adjei in Latvia. According to Mr. Ablakwa, the Ministry has already activated processes to establish the full facts surrounding the incident.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated urgent investigations through the relevant diplomatic pathways, and the Ghanaian public will be kept informed as developments unfold,” the Minister stated.

He further issued a strong warning, stressing that Ghana will not remain indifferent when its citizens are harmed abroad. He emphasised that any act of violence against a Ghanaian, regardless of where it occurs, will be pursued and accountability demanded.

The renewed government intervention follows the death of 21-year-old Nana Agyei, a first-year student pursuing Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) at Riga Technical University. Reports indicate that the young Ghanaian fell from the sixth floor of his residence on Baznicas Street on June 4, 2025. He had commenced his studies at the university in July 2024.

While Latvian authorities have described the incident as an accidental fall, the student’s family has strongly disputed that conclusion, arguing that the circumstances surrounding his death are suspicious and warrant a thorough investigation.

Family members have revealed that just three days before his death, Nana Agyei sent a disturbing voice message in which he claimed he had been poisoned, raising fears that he may have been deliberately harmed. The family believes this information contradicts the official explanation and strengthens their call for an independent and comprehensive inquiry.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for the deceased. Officials have assured the public that they are engaging Latvian authorities and other relevant institutions, and that regular updates will be provided as investigations progress.

The case has sparked widespread concern among Ghanaians at home and abroad, with many calling for transparency, accountability, and protection for Ghanaian students studying overseas.
