The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has revealed that 380 commercial drivers have been arrested for demanding fares from passengers that are not officially approved by transport authorities.

The minister explained that the crackdown began in November 2025 as part of a broader initiative to enforce fare regulations ahead of the Christmas season, ensuring commuters are not overcharged during the festive period.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Dr. Amoakohene said, “Since last month, 380 drivers have been arrested for charging an unapproved fee. We are also in discussions with the Ministry of Transport to secure additional bus support for the Christmas festivities.”

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has also deployed a special task force to clamp down on drivers flouting the approved fare schedule.

Speaking to the media, Henrietta Afia Konadu, Public Relations Officer for KMA, said the unit, operating under the directive of the Kumasi Mayor, will carry out regular spot checks to ensure compliance with transport regulations.

“The mayor has instructed us to intensify monitoring and ensure that drivers adhere to the prescribed rates,” Konadu stated. “Our officers will be on the roads, and any driver found charging illegal fares will face the full force of the law.”

The coordinated efforts by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and KMA aim to protect commuters and maintain orderly transport operations during the busy festive period.
