The Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team has arrested three individuals in the Dabala and Sogakope areas of the Volta Region for allegedly impersonating prominent public figures on social media, including the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspects, Gideon Awudi (25), Edem Soku (33), and Judith Soku (31), are alleged to have used fake online profiles and social media accounts to deceive victims, often requesting money or personal information under the guise of official authority.

Authorities say the suspects are also suspected of engaging in a variety of online financial crimes, including mobile money fraud, credit card scams, airtime fraud, and fraudulent online sales, targeting victims across multiple digital platforms. Investigators believe the fraudulent activities spanned several months and may have involved numerous unsuspecting Ghanaians.

The Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and are assisting authorities in ongoing investigations to uncover the full extent of their operations. Law enforcement officials warned the public to exercise caution when interacting with unknown social media accounts, especially those claiming to represent public officials.

This arrest highlights the increasing use of social media platforms for criminal activity in Ghana, prompting authorities to step up cybercrime monitoring and enforcement efforts. Officials have called on citizens to report any suspicious online activity to the police to prevent further victimization.

The team is also investigating whether the suspects were part of a larger network operating across multiple regions, and further arrests could be expected as the investigation unfolds.
