The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dispatched a fact-finding team from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany to Latvia to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made the disclosure during a meeting with the late Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family at the Ministry, where he formally conveyed the government’s condolences and briefed them on steps taken so far.
He explained that the embassy-led mission was deployed promptly, taking advantage of Germany’s concurrent accreditation to Latvia, and has already submitted a preliminary report to the Ministry.
Mr. Ablakwa further noted that Latvian authorities have confirmed that investigations into Nana Agyei Ahyia’s death are ongoing and have not yet been concluded.
To deepen engagement, the Minister said he has formally notified the Latvian government of his intention to travel to Latvia to meet with his counterpart and engage directly with investigators handling the case. He added that members of Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family will join the delegation to ensure their participation in the process.
The Minister also assured the family that the Government of Ghana will involve independent experts to analyse all investigative reports, including the anticipated final report from Latvian authorities, to guide the next steps in the pursuit of justice.
Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability as it works to secure answers and closure for the bereaved family.
