The Management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has publicly stated that it will carry out a collective burial ceremony for dozens of bodies that have remained unclaimed, unidentified, or without known identity in its mortuary, due to severe overcrowding at the facility.
In a statement by hospital authorities said the mortuary’s storage space is completely exhausted, making it necessary to clear room and maintain orderly operations at the facility.
According to them, hospital records show that about 320 bodies are expected to be part of the mass burial exercise. Those remains have been held for varying periods without families, relatives, or other interested parties coming forward to claim them.
The statement urged relatives, next of kin, or any persons with an interest in the bodies to contact hospital management within 21 days of the notice, setting a deadline of 18 January 2026 to make arrangements for identification or private burial.
“All remains that are not claimed by the stated deadline will be interred in accordance with approved protocols and relevant regulations,” the hospital stated
According to the hospital, mass burial will be conducted in partnership with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), ensuring that the exercise is carried out properly and in line with public health requirements.
Hospital officials also appealed to the general public for understanding and cooperation as they implement the exercise, which they described as necessary to address the critical congestion at one of the country’s busiest mortuary facilities.
