President John Dramani Mahama has called for tangible and measurable reparations for Africa, insisting that centuries of slavery, exploitation, and colonial domination must be addressed through decisive action, not symbolic gestures.

Speaking on the global conversation surrounding reparations, Mahama argued that true justice for Africa should involve substantial or total debt cancellation, direct financial compensation, and the return of African artefacts currently held in Western museums and private collections.

“Africa cannot move forward while still paying for a past it did not create,” Mahama said, stressing that wealth extracted during the transatlantic slave trade and colonial era laid the foundation for modern prosperity in Europe and North America.

He explained that debt relief would free African nations from crippling repayments that divert resources from education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social development, calling the current situation a continuation of historical injustice.

Mahama also urged direct financial reparations, noting that development aid or grants cannot replace compensation for centuries of forced labor, resource extraction, and economic sabotage. He described reparations as a moral obligation rather than charity.

On cultural restitution, Mahama demanded the unconditional return of African artefacts taken during colonial conquests. “Our artefacts tell our story. They do not belong in glass cases thousands of miles away from the people who created them,” he stated.

His comments come amid growing global pressure on former colonial powers to confront their historical roles in slavery and colonialism. Several African leaders and advocacy groups have intensified calls for reparations, while some Western institutions have begun returning artefacts, though critics say progress remains slow.

Mahama urged African governments to present a united front in demanding reparations, warning that fragmented approaches would weaken the continent’s negotiating power.

As the global debate over reparations gains momentum, Mahama’s stance reinforces a broader African demand: justice must extend beyond words to real economic, cultural, and structural redress for the continent’s historical and ongoing struggles.
