After years of eerie stillness and rusted pipelines, Tema Oil Refinery has thundered back into motion, reigniting Ghana’s petroleum heartbeat and restoring hope to an industry long starved of local refining power.
What was once a dormant national relic has now surged back into action, as fresh streams of refined fuel pour into storage — a powerful sign that TOR has reclaimed its place as a strategic backbone of the nation’s fuel security and economic revival.
This dramatic resurrection follows a painstaking Turnaround Maintenance operation on the ageing Crude Distillation Unit — a gruelling engineering overhaul carried out between August 1 and October 30, 2025, under intense safety protocols and world-class technical supervision.
Only after rigorous inspections and clearance from the National Petroleum Authority on December 19, 2025, was TOR finally granted the all-green signal to fire up its engines once more.
Rather than rushing blindly into full capacity, management has launched a careful, staged return — stabilising machines, fine-tuning systems and guarding priceless equipment to ensure the refinery rises stronger, steadier, and more reliable than ever.
At the heart of this revival stands a powerful new F-61 furnace, soon to be fully integrated into operations — a game-changing upgrade that will lift refining capability from 28,000 barrels per day back to its original 45,000, with bold expansion plans targeting a formidable 60,000 barrels per day in the near future.
TOR’s comeback, the company declares, is the fruit of unwavering leadership and national resolve — praising President John Dramani Mahama for championing the refinery’s restoration, and Energy and Green Transition Minister Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor for guiding its rebirth with decisive technical direction.
Board members, engineers, and frontline workers — who endured the refinery’s darkest years — are hailed as the true lifeblood of this comeback story, their grit and loyalty breathing new strength into the plant’s awakening core.
With renewed confidence from partners and the public, TOR vows to guard this momentum fiercely — promising resilience, excellence and a new era in Ghana’s refining destiny.
