Mr. John Afful, Communications Director for the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (RCOMSDEP), has commended the operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Blue Water Guards, stating that their interventions have significantly reduced illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, across the country.
According to him, the sustained presence of these task forces in mining and riverine communities has curtailed the activities of illegal miners and restored a sense of law and order in areas that were once heavily affected.
Mr. Afful explained that the strategic approach adopted by NAIMOS and the Blue Water Guards, including constant patrols, intelligence-led operations, and collaboration with local stakeholders, has yielded positive results.
He noted that the protection of water bodies has particularly improved, as the Blue Water Guards continue to prevent the use of excavators and other heavy machinery along rivers and streams. This, he said, has helped reduce water pollution and safeguarded livelihoods that depend on clean water sources.
He further emphasized that RCOMSDEP fully supports these enforcement efforts and believes they must be sustained to achieve long-term success.
He stressed that the fight against Galamsey requires a coordinated national effort and maintained that with NAIMOS and the Blue Water Guards remaining vigilant, the country is on the right path toward responsible and sustainable mining.
