Traders at the Accra Central Business District have recounted a frightening stampede that erupted, as intense Christmas shopping pressure led to severe congestion at the market.
Speaking to journalists, traders said the incident occurred amid heavy human traffic, as shoppers rushed to purchase food items and other essentials ahead of the festive season.
According to eyewitnesses, the extreme overcrowding sparked panic within the market, causing several people to collapse, including a pregnant woman.
Others, particularly children, reportedly lost mobile phones and money during the confusion.
Traders said the situation nearly turned tragic before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service stepped in, spraying water to calm the crowd and restore order, preventing further injuries.
